Proposal

Session Description:

This session will consist of a scenario that immerses the audience in the discovery and design phases for the pilot launch of the course How People Learn. Rather than having a traditional presentation on the course design and outcomes, participants will engage with the key tensions and design decisions faced by the How People Learn team and have the opportunity to reflect with peers on the actions they would take. As a group, they will decide on the best course of action to take and review the outcomes of those decisions. They will compare them to the actual decisions made by the team and see the final design of the pilot launch from July 2018. We will briefly discuss evaluation results from the pilot and redesign efforts that are underway for the launch of the course this summer. Finally, participants will reflect on the possibilities and challenges should their institution decide to embark on a similar journey.

Session Outline (DRAFT):

Introduction (5’)

Reflect: What does it mean to design an online experience that is both personalized and foundational? What questions come up for you? What ideas come to mind? What challenges do you predict?

Participants reflect and post to PollEverywhere

Reflect back and transition to main presentation

Set the context (5’)

  • Meet the team and stakeholders

  • Introduce some of the initial project constraints from the grant and emotional tenor of that early experience

Decision Sequences (15’) - There will most likely be 4-5 of these for total ~60’

  • Present decision and give participants options to choose from (1’)

  • Peer discussion (3’)

  • Poll (1’)

  • Reveal and Discuss (5’)

  • Key Takeaways and Lessons Learned (5’)

Example:

Present Design Decision 1: What is a personalized course?

What should the team do?

  • Option 1: Consult the literature and look for examples

  • Option 2: Talk to students

  • Option 3: Define personalization

Pair discussions and vote on PollEv

Reveal the outcome of that decision

Present the actual decision and discuss key takeaways

Present Final Design (5-7’)

Design architecture for summer pilot of 2018

What We Learned (5-7’)

Results from Evaluation

Where We’re Going (5-7’)

Redesign Efforts

Possibilities and Perils (5’)

What possibilities and perils might exist for your team and institution should you undertake a similar project?

Q&A (15’)
