Abstract
In this chapter I show that sensitivity to the rule of contradiction can be useful in the lives of children, especially in combating prejudice and discrimination, because it encourages children to seek counterexamples to universal judgments. I argue that sociological models that attempt to delineate the roots of prejudice can be complemented by an understanding of the rule of contradiction. I further argue that the pedagogical forum best suited to promoting sensitivity to the rule is the community of inquiry, in which counterexamples stand as the most forceful devices challenging cherished beliefs and opinions.
