Description
Introduction: Although many workplaces may embrace full inclusion in principle, the workplace environments often create obstacles and barriers for neurodivergent individuals. These obstacles are exacerbated by a lack of understanding of neurodiversity by leaders within many workplaces, which often results in isolation and limited career advancement opportunities for neurodivergent employees. This research aims to explore strategies for employers to eliminate obstacles and foster inclusive, supportive environments for employees of all neurotypes. This topic is often addressed using "accommodations" – a reactive measure that involves making adjustments specific to individual employees’ needs. This proposal, however, is based on a different paradigm. The central idea is that if a workplace environment is truly neuroinclusive, meaning it is designed to support workers of all neurotypes, then neurodivergent employees would be more likely to thrive. Method: This project utilizes a literature review to explore the challenges autistic employees face in the workplace and to identify best practices for creating neuroinclusive work environments. It also examines policies and practices that promote neurodiversity and reduce barriers to career progression. Results: Main findings from the literature review highlight three key strategies: inclusive communication strategies, flexible work arrangements, and sensory-friendly environments. The findings offer actionable recommendations and strategies to guide employers in addressing common barriers faced by neurodivergent employees. The ultimate goal is to foster equitable opportunities for all neurotype employees, reduce workplace disparities, and enhance health equity.
