Description
This research investigates the consequences of urban development on agricultural communities in Burlington County, New Jersey. Burlington County, located in Southern New Jersey, has historically been an essential agricultural region, significantly contributing to New Jersey's farming industry. Today's expanding urban development has gradually been encroaching on agricultural land, impacting the lives of agricultural workers as well as the surrounding environment. This study will analyze the social, economic, and environmental factors that may be challenged within Burlington County, NJ, by urban development from 1990 to the present day. The methods of investigation rely on USDA records of crop yields and annual sales, Census Bureau population growth statistics for the county, NJDEP and Burlington County Health Department air quality reports, Google Earth imagery to track urbanization and the decrease of farmland, and NJDOT traffic pattern records. The anticipated results will show that urban development has negatively impacted farmland production, the agricultural job sector, and the health of the environment. Understanding the consequences of urban development on agricultural areas of Burlington County, NJ, is essential for informing future urban planning, mitigating environmental impacts, and advancing sustainable agriculture.
