Summary
When Jess's doll Roller needs to make a trip to the doll hospital, Jess is worried that Roller won't look the same when she comes home. What Jess doesn't realize is that Roller's trip to the doll hospital will trigger a special change in their relationship. Together with the companion teacher's manual Making Sense of My World, The Doll Hospital is a wonderful introduction for children to philosophical thought.
Excerpt
I used to wonder where my doll came from. One day I asked my mother and she said, “I bought her for you at the toy shop.”
“Where was Roller before she came to the toy shop?” I asked.
“I think she was at the doll-maker,” Mum said.
“And before that?”
“Maybe she was a thought in the mind of the doll-maker,” Mum said slowly.
Have you ever thought you understood something but later you found out you didn't understand it at all? That's what happened to me the day my mother talked about being a thought in the mind of the doll-maker.
