Description

In Arnold Lobel’s classic story “Dragons and Giants,” Frog and Toad read a book about knights fighting dragons and giants and then measure themselves against those heroes, asking, “Are we brave?” Societies all over the world show children images of martial bravery – knights and giants – from early on, and then, at about age 18, draft them into the military to act out those ideals, which were presented as part of how the adult world, the real world, works. “Dragons and Giants” isn’t just a conceptual puzzle, but something basic, central, a wellspring of philosophy. It lights up, in a time of war, especially bright.
