Abstract
We report the synthesis and initial characterization of Ba9Sc2 (SiO4)6, the first example of a new oxide structure-type accommodating a large alkaline earth ion, Ba2+, a large octahedral ion, Sc3+, and tetrahedral silicate units. Transparent crystals which crystallize in the rhombohedral space group, R3̄, with aH = 9.8716(2)Å, cH = 21.9376(7)Å were grown from a silica-rich eutectic melt. The structure contains layers made up of ScO6 octahedra linked by SiO4 tetrahedra. The Ba2+ ions occupy large high-coordination-number interlayer sites.
