Abstract
My thesis focuses on Merce Cunningham’s contributions to the evolution of modern dance and how to maintain Cunningham’s relevance, in terms of his technique and repertory, in the present and the future. By examining Cunningham’s history as a dancer and the influences that helped to shape his technique and repertory, my understanding of the motivation behind his methods and philosophies greatly deepened. My research explores the development of his trademarked technique, his innovative use of choreographic tools, and ways we can incorporate them today in the classroom and the creative process. Uncovering information from various written resources, interviews, and working in the studio with students have provided abundant insight into the importance of carrying Cunningham’s legacy forward. His method of training and body of work remain valuable assets that continue to enhance and inspire the dance community. My thesis project, Cunningham: Change, a Legacy Continues, is a convergence of my research and creative practice, resulting in the staging of Cunningham’s Cross Currents and the premiere of a response, Delicate Undertow. Responding to Cunningham’s work extends a conversation that fuels Cunningham’s continuing legacy.
