Description

The purpose of this project is to understand music from a mathematical perspective, rather than a perspective requiring years of music theory training. By approaching composition with a mathematical mindset, using repeated patterns and transformations of a central theme, individuals not educated in music theory are able to write music without having to go through years of training and lessons. In this project, we are approaching composition using this mathematical method, allowing us to recreate and write new pieces in the style of Bach. Through awareness of transformations of themes present in a select piece, we are then able to apply the transformations to our own theme, allowing us to write a piece of music in the style of Bach based off of the simple transformations and repeated patterns, rather than a deep understanding of music theory.
