Abstract
A great deal of confusion and controversy has centered on the analysis of the large numbers of rural dwellers in the world today who practice both small-scale subsistence cultivation and wage labor. This paper discusses and illustrates an approach, based on the work of E.P.Thompson, which allows us to take into account both local practices and the global structure without imposing a "capitalism-centered' view or ignoring global patterns and similarities. -Author
