Abstract
This article traces the French and Japanese networks of art critic and collector Philippe Burty, who considered Japonisme as a form of sociability and mutual intercultural understanding rather than as a simple act of acquisition or emulation. For Burty, discussion, exchange, and sharing were integral to the process of understanding the Japanese artists responsible for the works available on the European market in the second half of the nineteenth century.
