Lorsqu'un jour, je compris des humains l'inconstance,
Je fus vraiment troublé de mon expérience
Alors, j'appréciai davantage l'ami
Qui m'est resté fidèle et qui m'a raffermi;
Avec lui d'idéal l'âme toujours s'enivre;
Oui, je bénis ce doux consolateur : le livre !

He is, of our friends the most faithful, the best;
He soothes, consoles and delights the heart;
We can put all our trust in he alone,
He feeds the mind exquisite pleasures.
This friend, it is he whom we must love the most;
Because, believe me, he has never disappointed!...
When one day I understood the fickleness of humans,
I was truly troubled by my experience;
So I appreciated even more the friend
Who has remained faithful and strengthened me;
With the thought of him, the soul is always intoxicated
Yes, I bless this sweet consoler: he, the book!
