Description
Part III of God and Country
Transgender people have emerged as a primary target of the Christian Right and the executive actions of President Donald Trump. Gender affirming care has been restricted, trans people in the country’s military have been targeted as not satisfying the “rigorous standards necessary for military service,” and most notably an executive order issued on Inauguration Day declared it to be the official position of the U.S. federal government to only recognize two sexes, male and female. The ongoing efforts against DEI programs also continue to impact attempts to protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Dr. Chrissy Stroop will discuss these developments in relation to strains of Christian nationalism in the U.S.

Co-editor of Empty the Pews (Epiphany, 2019), cofounder of The Flytrap, and a senior correspondent for Religion Dispatches, Chrissy Stroop's unusual life trajectory has given her unique insights into contemporary authoritarianism, not least that of the American Christian Right in which she was born and raised. Educated and indoctrinated in anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ, and generally conspiratorial evangelical Christian schools, Stroop went on to earn a B.A. in history and German from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in modern Russian history from Stanford University.
Now a full-time writer, commentator, and speaker, much of Stroop's current work focuses on the theocratic politics shaping contemporary America to the detriment of people like Stroop, an atheist who came out as transgender in 2019.
This Webinar is held in honor and remembrance of Ashton Clatterbuck, a brilliant young trans man and Montclair State University student who lost his life to suicide in 2024.
