Description

Background: College is a time of stress, anxiety, and a mix of emotions such as fear, and loneliness. In order to cope with overwhelming circumstances, many college students rely on caffeine to get an extra “jump start,” and to stay concentrated and energized, while also staying physically active to relieve stress and promote confidence. Research shows that caffeine can improve short-term memory, improve alertness, increase performance in sports, help one stay away longer, but also may result in bad sleep quality, increased heart rate, and insomnia. Students who exercise are less likely to feel nervous or depressed in college, and are likely to have a greater sense of self-esteem. Therefore the purpose of our study is to explore the influence of caffeine and exercise on college students.

Methods: A retrospective review of 400 electronic health records, from college students enrolled in a State University from 2016-2017, were examined. The information collected focused on caffeine use (such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, and drinks,) and exercise.

Results: Data collection and analysis is currently ongoing.

Conclusion: Conclusions cannot be made yet because results and data analysis is still pending and being collected. It is hypothesized that college students many college students habitually consume a form of caffeine to stay energized, and perform moderate physical exercise to relieve stress and stay in good shape.
