Description

In recent decades, global temperatures have been increasing, in addition, climate change has already influenced and altered weather patterns followed by more intense storms and surges. Time is crucial and so is the necessity to adopt greener and more sustainable lifestyles. Consumers are now more than ever considering the environmental impact before purchasing a service or product. Therefore, companies who prioritize eco-friendly and environmentally friendly practices and business models have gained popularity. The question at hand is how can businesses become more sustainable? Or how can existing businesses become greener? Throughout a semester I will be working an internship and fulfilling my senior research with Montclair Township, New Jersey. During this internship the main focus will be to promote Montclair’s existing Green Business Certification Program as well as the New Jersey Sustainable Business Registry Program. Outreach will include all of Montclair Township’s existing businesses and educating them on the current programs within the state and municipality that they can participate in. Both programs are available to any business that wants to participate in being certified. The goal of this internship and senior research is to conduct outreach and educate the community, as well as local businesses on how you can make minor adjustments in preferences to promote sustainable living. Often times, when informed on energy consumption, businesses will make modifications that not only cost less but are more energy efficient as well. The end result of this project I hope to have new businesses certified on the Township’s Green Business Recognition Program, as well as the New Jersey Sustainable Business Registry Program. The ultimate objective of this project is to aid Montclair Township in obtaining sustainability certification from the State of New Jersey’s Sustainable Business Registry Program.
