Description

This paper addresses how the supernatural, in its various forms, influenced the ancient Roman world. Through the analysis of archaeological data discovered at several sites from the ancient Roman world, this paper constructs a holistic view of the importance of the supernatural in Roman society. In addition to recorded texts, archaeological finds can help us to understand the beliefs of the ancient Romans. In particular, analysis of archaeological sites where religious rites and ceremonies were practiced, and smaller pieces of material culture, like votives or offerings left behind, explain the significance of religion in the daily lives of the Roman people. Key sites discussed in this paper include the Anna Perenna Fountain and the Nymphaeum at Chedworth Roman Villa. The supernatural had a significant influence on liminal spaces, religious cults, and everyday people of the Roman world. Through the examination of archaeological data, the link between the supernatural, and the impacts of myths, rituals, and ceremonies on the culture of ancient Rome are revealed. The legacy of the supernatural's influence on Roman culture in ancient times can still be seen in the culture’s symbolism and traditions today.
