Undocumented students make up 7% of the public school population, but this number drops significantly to 1.9% on college campuses. What barriers exist that prevent undocumented students from continuing their education? While there are many explantations for the drop of undocumented students in school, this study looks at the role of school counselors in implementation of state policies affecting undocumented students, specifically their access to in-state tuition and state financial aid. Schools counselors throughout the tri-state area have been surveyed and asked about basic demographic information, work experience, knowledge of such policies and their professional trainings. The information found through the surveys along with the geographical location and racial diversity of schools, allows for a trend to be shown based on these factors. Although more information is still being gathered, the findings so far have shown that location can have an effect on the knowledge school counselors have with at-risk students, which can ultimately play a role in why there is a significant low number of undocumented students in higher education institutions.
