Description

Clinical Scenario: Carpal tunnel syndrome is an injury in the wrist when the median nerve is being compressed. Athletes who engage in repetitive hand motions such as, electronic sports(Esports) athletes exhibit the highest prevalence of this condition. A treatment approach can be based on therapeutic modality application for symptom reduction and training load modifications. One such modality is low-level laser therapy which can be used to reduce inflammation, pain, and other symptoms of the condition. This critical appraisal will focus on how quickly low-level laser therapy reduces symptoms compared to other therapeutic modalities. Clinical Question: Does low-level laser therapy reduce symptoms early on in rehabilitation compared to other modalities in Esport athletes experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome? Summary of Key Findings: Using critical appraisal techniques, a systematic review of Pubmed and Medline was conducted for carpal tunnel syndrome, low-level laser therapy and Esport athletes. Criteria Included sources that were published within the last five years, written in English, peer reviewed, and full text. After the initial search, exclusion/inclusion criteria was applied to remove any duplicates. Quality assessment was performed using the Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy on the final results. Clinical Bottom Line: Low-level laser has shown to make a larger impact when used early on in rehabilitation compared to other modalities in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. The SORT grade of B for the included sources recommended that incorporating lower-level laser therapy early on in the rehabilitation process helps athletes with carpal tunnel syndrome more than if not included.
