Description

Research has shown that those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have difficulties in emotion regulation and emotion identification and awareness. The case study detailed in this paper explored the efficacy of interoception- based music therapy influenced by the Zones of Regulation curriculum on emotion regulation and identification with individuals with IDD. Musical and non-musical pretest and posttest assessments were conducted consisting of adapted versions of the Musical Passages for Emotion Perception Scale (MPEP) and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). This quantitative data was analyzed along with qualitative data taken from video reviews of sessions, researcher observations during and outside of sessions, reviewing clinical documents, and conferring with other members of the treatment team. Results proved interventions beneficial. Most service users increased their classification abilities related to the emotion “happy”, and all service users increased their self and co-regulation abilities. Qualitative observations led to potentially useful future therapeutic and research considerations. Data was collected by the researcher with human subject participants.
