Description

This research attempts to answer the question of how Montclair and surrounding townships can help lessen the effects of climate change on underserved communities through the implementation of green infrastructure and other sustainable practices. Within the time limit of this semester, this project examines how the effects of climate change are not equitably distributed among all communities. Underserved communities, like poor communities, are disproportionately negatively affected by the disadvantages that come with climate change, which can include rises in temperature and lack of funding for sustainable energy. There are steps that can be taken to lessen the effects of climate change, like the implementation of green infrastructure and other sustainable practices, for these communities in and near Montclair, New Jersey. This research will use income census and temperature data from the study area and compare these using GIS maps to determine how they overlap. Then, information about certain types of green infrastructure and practices like sustainable transportation methods can be used to help underserved communities who are highly affected by climate change reduce the effects and offer them the same solutions that are available to other communities. Not only does this project look into the existence of a disparity between underserved communities and advantaged communities when it comes to climate change, but it also dives into the ways in which those most affected can be helped. I expect to find that areas of low income are both more strongly affected by climate change and have less access to sustainable alternatives.
