Description

This literature review examines the prevalence and effects of weight discrimination in higher education. Highlighting its urgency is the 2019 Harvard Implicit Association Test, which found 80% of the 4 million participants held biases against fat individuals. Research indicates weight discrimination is strongly associated with negative outcomes like bullying, academic underperformance, mental health issues, and eating disorders. This review further outlines the historical roots in racist and patriarchal ideologies; and significant biases in the medical industry that perpetuate discrimination. This review emphasizes the need for further investigation, especially considering the limited focus on intersectional and superfat identities in existing research.
