Description
The purpose of this research paper is to examine how LGBTQ+ students interact with their physical environment to find a sense of community. The research will be conducted at Montclair State University on students of any age who identify as LGBTQ+ through visual data collection as well as participant observation to identify ways in which students and/or faculty create LGBTQ+ "safe spaces." I will discuss the application of LGBTQ+ perspectives, specifically gender roles, on the physical environment, drawing on the study of transecology. From there, I will outline how this community uniquely creates space and community. Acknowledging the ways in which LGBTQ+ people take up space, interact with their environment, and create a resilient community, I remark on this powerful tool and its significance to apply to environmental practices.
