Abstract
The introduction to this special issue about French fascination with the aging process provides an overview of cultural interest in this topic from the Second Empire to World War I. It sets the scene for other contributors' analysis of the ways in which nineteenth-century writers and scientists took up aging or aged figures to explore complex new social dynamics.
