Abstract
First-year undergraduate students in a 100-level honors literature class (“Great Books and Ideas”) successfully engaged with challenge-based learning (CBL) as they read works where characters seek to find common ground with others. Students used insights gained from these texts to identify and address similar issues on their university campus and in their communities. By conducting research, communicating with different stakeholders, and working together to minimize conflict, the class collectively resolved several controversial issues related to the University’s food service and student support programs, all within a single semester. The successful application of CBL in this honors class demonstrates how students can translate the lessons learned from literary works into strategies for resolving real-world conflict, all while developing professional skills and building community.
