Abstract
This essay explores the impact of high stakes testing and standardized curricula on joyful teaching and learning experiences for urban English Language Arts (ELA) educators in Northern New Jersey. It discusses the need to balance legislative requirements with providing culturally responsive pedagogy to a diverse student population.
