Matin de printemps / Spring Morning

English language translation of Ida Faubert's "Matin de printemps" by Olivia Ponzio

Original Work

Au profond de l’allée,

Les quénépiers en fleurs

Répandent une odeur

Légère et vanillée.

Un essaim bourdonnant

D'abeilles matinales

S'en vient dans le jour pâle,

Joyeux et frissonnant,

Chercher dans les corolles

Un précieux butin,

Et dans le clair matin

Les papillons s'envolent.

Un rayon de soleil

Baise au front une rose

Qui se trouble et qui n'ose

Regretter son sommeil.

Un parfum se respire

Sous les grands lataniers,

Un parfum printanier

De choses en délire.

Et je m'emplis les bras

De fleurs à peine écloses.

De jasmins et de roses,

De lis et de lilas

Et j'écoute, charmée,

Le murmure des eaux

Et tous les chants d'oiseaux

Épars dans la ramée.

Translated Work

Along the path out of sight

From the flowered lime trees

Flows out upon the breeze

A scent, vanilla and light.

Abuzz and fluttering

The morning bees swarm

About in the pale morn

Joyous and quivering,

In the morning’s clear light

Hidden in the flower petals

A precious treasure to unsettle

And the butterflies take flight.

The sun’s gentle rays kiss

The rose’s blushing petal head,

A flower that doesn’t dread

Leaving sweet sleep’s bliss.

From beneath the palms’ verdure

A scent wafts out flowing.

The scent of spring

Of things that enrapture;

And my arms hardly lack

For flowers that barely close.

Full of jasmine and rose,

Full of lily and lilac.

Charmed, I listen

To the songbirds’ crooning

Among the trees that are blooming

And the babbling waters that glisten.

The sky, with colors melting

From the blazing sunshine,

I feel within this soul of mine

The need to sing all of this spring.
