Le Secret d'être heureux

Retenez bien cette leçon :

Jeunes amants, jeunes fillettes,

Heureux par votre illusion,

Restez dans l'erreur où vous êtes ;

Ne cherchez pas à pénétrer

Le secret de votre bien-être.

On peut gagner à l'ignorer,

Souvent on perd à le connaître.

Si Fanchon me disait un jour :

« Mon ami, c'est toi seul que j'aime »

Je lui répondrais à mon tour :

« Mon cœur te chérit tout de même. »

Après cet aveu rassurant,

Que nous faudrait-il davantage ?

Fanchon, heureuse, moi content,

Tout irait bien dans le ménage.

Souvent un curieux désir

Trouble les beaux jours de la vie ;

Prétendre tout approfondir

N'est, suivant moi, qu'une folie.

En cherchant un objet flatteur

On rencontre... tout autre chose.

Sachons profiter du bonheur,

Sans en vouloir trouver la cause.

The Secret to Happiness

Young girls, young people bound by passion,

Happily deceived by your illusion,

This lesson you should hold firmly:

Live within your misconception;

Never seek to penetrate

The secret to your happiness.

We can succeed by ignoring it,

Sometimes we lose in trying to know it.

If Fanchon told me one day:

“You are the only one I love,

My friend." I would say:

“You are cherished in my heart all the same.”

After this reassurance,

What more might one need?

I would be glad, Fanchon happy,

Everything would be normal in our relationship.

Sometimes a curious desire

Disturbs the happy moments of life;

Pretending to know everything

Is often, to me, only a distraction.

In searching for a flattering object

We encounter...something entirely different.

Let us enjoy happiness,

Without seeking its cause.
