Abstract
The article discusses the impact of student leadership programs in helping at-risk girls succeed in the transition from middle school to high school. It focuses on the experiences of minority female students at Red Bank Middle School in New Jersey in the Girls Leading Outward (GLO) program supported by the Developing Safe and Civil Schools Project at Rutgers University. The program emphasizes the role of problem solving, confident speaking, passion, and teamwork in student leadership and describes the use of acronyms in helping students learn leadership skills.
