Abstract

Purpose: This commentary delves into the profound impact of Social Emotional Learning (SEL), particularly through the lens of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), on Health Education, elucidating its potential to nurture the well-being of PreK-12 students. Results: Students experiencing comprehensive skills-based health/SEL education gain knowledge, skills, and competencies that are used within and beyond the classroom, fostering the development of healthier decision-making, bolstering self-esteem, and enriching the emotional and mental wellness of students. Health educators have the opportunity to utilize CASEL's SEL Competencies in conjunction with the National Health Education Standards, as both are mutually aligned and share the goal of enhancing student health and well-being. Research consistently underscores the interconnectedness of emotional well-being and the dimensions of health. Conclusions: Incorporating CASEL's SEL principles (e.g. self-awareness, self- management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness) into existing health lessons through age-appropriate activities (e.g. group discussions, cooperative learning, and role-playing) further augments student social and emotional growth. Beyond the classroom, health educators inspire students to apply CASEL's SEL strategies in their daily lives. This includes being self and socially aware, able to manage themselves and set goals, manage stress, practice self care, build resiliency, foster healthy relationships, and make health enhancing decisions. Equipping students with these enduring skills empowers them to navigate challenges adeptly, make informed choices, and champion the well-being of themselves and others. Ultimately, the incorporation of Social Emotional Learning, particularly through CASEL's model, into Health Education emerges as a transformative approach, positioning educators as key influencers in shaping healthier, well-rounded individuals who prioritize emotional and mental health. Recommendations: This commentary recommends further research and implementation of SEL strategies in health education curricula to maximize student well-being and academic success. Additionally, ongoing professional development for educators is suggested to effectively integrate SEL principles into teaching practices.
