Description

At a time when the disproportionate effects of COVID-19, policing, and disenfranchisement of communities of color have been laid bare, we will examine the dynamic interplay of race, protest, music, healing, religion, and post-colonial theory. Dr. Micheal Viega (John J. Cali School of Music, Music Therapy) and Dr. Kate E. Temoney, (College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Religion) invite you to participate in a one-hour web series inspired by the 2019 book by Dr. Theodore W. Burgh: Is God Funky or What? Black Biblical Culture and Contemporary Popular Music. This is the second episode, which features Toni Blackman. Toni is a social entrepreneur, cypher facilitator, social arts activist and advocate, director, and producer who was the first Hip Hop artist selected to work as a Cultural Ambassador with the US Department of State. She currently is the Alumni Outreach Director for Next Level Hip Hop Diplomacy Project. Her new book, Wisdom of the Cypher, will be released in January, 2021 on Red Sky Presents.
