Description

Montclair is a town rich in history, and while there are works that tell of its history, little has been done to show the importance that geology has played in shaping it. Since geoheritage is defined in short as geology shaping history, it will require in-depth analysis into both, with relation to Montclair. How has geology played a role in shaping what the town is today, and what geological features are most important to this idea? In order to address this question, a geological resource inventory study was conducted. This will be primarily done through the review of past geologic reports, maps, and data, as well as historical documents of the town, especially those highlighting the quarrying/mining industry, water resources, and development expansion. After identifying these features, it would be important to visit potential sites that show these geological features. This would allow on-site mapping and documentation, identification of sites for proposed parks/landmarks, and a more complete understanding of how these geological features impact Montclair today. The goal of this study was to highlight the geological resources within the township of Montclair, and how these resources, as well as the geologic history, has affected the development and growth of Montclair. This study should be completed by the end of April, and it is expected that this study will find that the geologic units have had a direct impact on the town's economy, culture, and development through various means researched in this study.
